Mililani Town | Mauka
Fun Facts
- The older portion of Mililani to the west of Interstate H-2 is known as Mililani Town. The newer portion of Mililani to the east of Interstate H-2 is known as Mililani Mauka.
- Mililani Mauka is a newer, more upscale, community east of Interstate H-2.
- James Dole founded the Hawaiian Pineapple Company in Oahu; today it is known simply as Dole. The original plantation is still open to the public for tours and is home of the largest maze built from over 11,000 tropical plants.
-
Just north of Mililani lies the former plantation town of Wahiawa. Wahiawa’s most well-known attraction is the Dole Plantation, Oahu’s only remaining commercial pineapple grower and home of the Pineapple Garden Maze, the world’s largest maze measuring more than two acres with a two-and-a-half-mile path. More than one million visitors attempt to find their way out of the life-sized maze each year. After conquering the maze, take a leisurely ride on the Pineapple Express Train followed by a tasty pineapple ice cream treat. Pineapple roots run deep in Wahiawa.
Sponsored by the Wahiawa Historical Society, the Pineapple Festival is held once a year at Wahiawa District Park in May. The Wahiawa Botanical Gardens located on California Avenue is a hidden gem, one of five Honolulu Botanical Gardens and home to tropical flowers requiring a cooler environment. A special effort has been made to develop the collection of native Hawaiian plants here, and provides a beautiful background for family photos or a quiet picnic in the park.
